No Real Focus
As anyone who has read my first post knows I am going to school for architecture. This means a lot of homework and crunch time around exams. Even though I am only in my first year it is still rather stressful. Exams are right around the corner and many large projects are piling up on me. I may not be updating this for a while as my attention is elsewhere, BUT it will be continued as soon as my schedule frees up and I have more time to devote to this. I also need to gather a list of things to research and write about. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

Affleck House
Master Bedroom
"Private" side
Detail of wall sconce
Living room
I chose this to be the first house featured for my blog because it is owned by the college I attend, Lawrence Tech. It is the subject matter of many classes projects because of its connection to the school and its relatively close proximity to campus. Visits by students are common, but most of the time only the exterior can be photographed unless accompanied by someone who has access to the house.
Frank Lloyd Wright's Affleck house was built in 1940 for Gregor S. and Elizabeth B. Affleck. It is built in Wright's Usonian style and is mostly brick. It has three bedrooms and four bathrooms. This many bathrooms is uncharacteristic of Wright and there may have been other plans for those spaces.
Due to the private ownership of the home by Lawrence Tech and ongoing restoration efforts by students and faculty tours are usual not possible. I was lucky enough to have the privilege of touring the house with one of my classes and took several photos of the interior.
The Beginning and the Barcelona Chair
As this is the first post of this blog I would like to introduce myself. My name is Dylan and I'm 19 years old. I am currently attending Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, MI. My major is architecture and my freshman year is almost over. I have been attracted to architecture since my freshman year of high school. The beauty of design as well as the complexity of the thought required is wonderful. I love the idea of being able to create something that people will actually use, admire and criticize. Criticism is the core of my education. Learning what is good and what is to be avoided is crucial in my success in the future.
With this blog I am trying to make myself look into architecture further and help my own understanding as well as others. I am also going to include things that relate to architecture such as furniture, interior design, landscaping and site plans. I will try my best to post at least one or two posts a day.
I will occasionally post my own work and things that I have done either independently or for school.
To Start Things Off:
Thought I would post something rather classic. The Barcelona Chair.
This chair was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich for German Pavilion at the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929 which was hosted in Barcelona, Spain. It was an icon of modernism, but inspired by ancient folding chairs. The frame is made of steel coated in chrome. The cushions are leather and filled with polyurethane foam. The dimensions of the chair are 75cm X 75cm X 75cm.
